Be clever, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
