Be smart, play brilliant, and pickup craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
