Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
