Be cunning, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
