Be brilliant, play cunning, and become versed in craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
