Be brilliant, play smart, and become versed in craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
