Be brilliant, play clever, and discover how to play craps the right way!
Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
