Be clever, play cunning, and learn how to play craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
