Be brilliant, play smart, and become versed in craps the proper way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
