Be clever, play cunning, and master craps the proper way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
