Be cunning, play clever, and master craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
