Be clever, play smart, and discover how to play craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
