Be brilliant, play cunning, and master craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
