Be smart, play smart, and become versed in craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
