Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
