Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
