Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
