Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
