Be clever, play brilliant, and pickup craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
