Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
