Be cunning, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
