Be smart, play smart, and master craps the right way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
