Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
