Be brilliant, play cunning, and pickup craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
