Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
