Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
