Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
