Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
