Be cunning, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the right way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
