Be brilliant, play smart, and master craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
