Be clever, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
