Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
