Be cunning, play smart, and discover how to play craps the ideal way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
