Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
