Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
