Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
