Be cunning, play cunning, and master craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
