Be clever, play cunning, and learn how to play craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
