Be smart, play smart, and become versed in craps the ideal way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
